Hunter Thompson 1937-2005

It's hard not the believe that the prospects of another Bush administration drove him to it, but it is sad to hear that Dr. Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide yesterday.

I've spent a great deal of time over the past few years working with people significantly younger than myself and this inevitably leads to the question: what were the sixties like? I tell them all to read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and then come back and we'll talk.

Hunter was the first person to convince me that you could fuse outrage, trenchant social analysis, and humor into something that would jump off the page and grab you by the throat. He spoke for a generation of people who knew that they were being lied to by their leaders -- sadly a generation that has, over the years, become so innured to this fact that they are not willing to try to do anything about it.

Here at Harvard, some of us who regularly watch the elephants dance find it amusingly ironic that what Larry Summers is now being charged with by the faculty is 1) having a huge ego, and 2) not listening to others.

So, what you do to move something as intractible as a federal bureaucracy is cause a huge problem, declare a "crisis," and then propose a solution that not only undermines your enemies but allows you to cut budgets thereby eliminating large portions of the government. Since the American public has the attention span of a bug, all you have to do is wrap yourself in the flag as you do this and you're golden.
