In my opinion, Alberto Gonzales has proven what a fine lawyer he is. When the client (in this case, the President of the United States) wants to torture, then the Geneva Convention is "quaint", but when the situation calls for being "committed to preserving civil rights" well then he's all with compiling "with all it's legal obligations as it fights the war on terror." Unlike the original Mosaic Law, the laws of the United States are not written in stone - they are subject to interpretation and Alberto's obviously very good at doing this.
Flexibility. That's what we need in an Attorney General. Mr. Gonzales has this in spades.
